"SHOCK" CONFIRMED
University of Alaska at Fairbanks researcher
Hans Stenbaek-Nielsen operated a high-speed camera
onboard the DC8 and recorded 59 meteors
at 1000 frames/s. None was captured brighter than last year's "shocking Leonid",
but several fainter ones confirm the formation of a shock-like feature, which is found to open up
in proportion to the brightness of the meteor, not the penetration depth in the atmosphere. This is unexpected for a true shock front, hence another mechanism is suspected responsible.
In addition, the peculiar diffuse high altitude beginning of two
bright fireballs was captured (see inset lower left), a phenomenon discovered by
Pavel Spurny
and Hans Betlem during the 1998 campaign.
