Lidar Observations of Leonids Foiled

The Institute of Atmospheric Physics at Kuehlungsborn, Germany (54 degree
N, 12 degree E) expected the 1997 Leonids with groundbased lidars for
Na, K, and Ca observations, an ionosonde, and a meteor-radar turned
ST radar. Unfortunately, continuous low level clouds prevented any
lidar observations during the nights of November 16/17 and 17/18. The
ionosonde took one ionogramm every 15 min. It registered four
sporadic E layers close to 100 km altitude on

November 17,  at 01:15 and 06:30 UT
November 18,  at 05:30 and from 09:00 until 10:45 UT.

Each of the 4 layers extended to between 5.5 and 6 MHz. The results of
the ST radar are under study.
