From: Chester S. Gardner, University of Illinois at Urbana, Il Date: Fri, 19 Nov 1999 08:15:26 -0600 Wed night's observations during the peak of Leonids were clouded out. However, the meteor rate was quite low by the time the radiant had risen. Last night the meteor rate was also low but we were successful in probing the only two persistent trails observed visually. The first, "Puff Daddy", was similar to last year's Glowworm although not as bright. The Na profiles exhibited complex structure within the meteor trail which extended over several km. Lidar tracking of the trail continued for over 30 min. This trail exhibits features which suggest the meteor exploded. Emission spectra and good CCD images were also obtained. The second "French Curve" was a long sinuous thin trail which was tracked by the lidar for about 12 min. Because the emissions were weak and trail was thin we do not believe emission spectra were obtained. Extensive video were obtained of both events.
